Born in Brooklyn, NY, he studied and graduated from the public school system. Jay left home to live with friends in upstate New York. He developed a love for jazz music and the guitar.
Gifted with sensitive hearing, he disliked the current high-end equipment. The sound was not "natural." Jay would modify current equipment by replacing circuits and transistors with his own creations to produce the true natural sound. This audio quality is so clear and natural; that you can converse during the play at volume level 3. You could hear and imagine the exact location of the drums, vocalist, and other instruments.
I should have let me build me a audio system.
A shy man of few words, he told me. "Quit your bank job and you & I can make real money." We did make money for over 25 years. Money allowed us to travel and vacation.
During one of our vacations, Jay lamented, "This is awful! I am sick and in pain. I am young and finally making some money, but I am sick. I can't find a cure to what ails me."
I couldn't understand him. He was big and healthy looking, but his health degenerated to cancer. In his final days, he wasn't afraid of death. He was afraid of pain. He asked us to not allow him to suffer. His last words to me were "SLOW DOWN."
At the hospice, when he was unresponsive. I touched him and felt the tension. I told his attendant, "He is in pain. I can feel it." A nurse adminstered a dose of morphine. Jay breathed a sign of relief.
